Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by! My name is Suzanne and I am a full-time working Mom to two young boys. We live in beautiful Santa Barbara and I have a passion for selling used stuff online. While I would consider my interest in reselling as a hobby (I actually have a full-time job as well), it has also brought in quite a bit of extra cash for our family of 4.

My passion for online selling started when my two boys kept asking if they could go on an airplane ride. Being only 2 and 4 they still don’t quite get the concept of money and how expensive things can be in life, especially an airplane ride for a family of four. So I decided to start a money jar and told my boys that if they went through some of their old toys I would sell them for them to make money to add to their “airplane ride fund”.

As a person who hates clutter the idea of my kids getting rid of some of their extra toys was a win-win for all us. Do my boys really need 3 of the same race car? I sold two of them for $5.00 each on Facebook Marketplace.

Speaking of Facebook Marketplace that is where I have sold about 95% of my items. I really like the interface and it is very simple to use. Living during the times of COVID I opted to do porch pickup for all of my items.  Once someone agrees that they would like to purchase an item I let them know it will be out on a porch in a bag with their name on it. I also give the customer an option to Venmo me the money which is free of charge for all or they can leave cash under my doormat. Cash is definitely my preference because the kids can actually see the money being put into their jar. My two year old now looks under our doormat every day thinking he will find money! We have a Ring doorbell installed so I can see who comes and goes and have yet to be stiffed by a customer. For bigger ticket items over $40.00 I do recommend having an in-person exchange.

If you are visiting my blog because you are interested in making some extra cash for yourself or your family, I do want to point out that all of my selling comes from items around our home.  If you do not have kids or are a minimalist by nature, you may find it difficult to find enough things laying around your home that you are willing to sell.  If you are a parent you know that kids quickly outgrow clothes, shoes, etc.. and outgrow toys as well thus giving me a continuous inventory of things to sell.

Online reselling has also made us think more about the quality of toys that we buy for our kids. My son wanted a play kitchen for Christmas.  Instead of buying the various plastic food items to go with it, I opted to spend a little more money buying items made out of wood because I knew I would be able to easily resell them when he outgrew it.  Wooden toys in general seem to be in high demand and I often sell them within hours of posting them for sale.  Wooden puzzles, trains, blocks, etc.. they all resell very well.

If you are looking for some encouragement to get started with reselling, I recommend you read online the various blogs/website on how to live a minimalist lifestyle. These blogs will give you ideas on how to downsize, declutter  and organize thus giving you inventory to start your selling!  There is also a Netflix series on Marie Kondo and her methods that is also very inspiring as well. So there you have it, that is a little bit about me. Feel free to read my other posts on tips and tricks and other suggestions for getting started. Happy Selling!
